Previously eBay offered USPS Retail Ground and its commercial version Parcel Select as two separate shipping options.
This meant I could set my eBay shipping preferences for USPS to retail rates, but override this preference on individual listings by choosing Parcel Select so the commercial rate would be shown instead.
After eBay combined First Class Package Services - Retail, First Class Package Services (commercial), USPS Retail Ground, Parcel Select (commercial) eBay failed to provide USPS Ground Advantage - Retail and USPS Ground Advantage (commercial) as separate shipping options.
eBay only offers USPS Ground Advantage as a shipping option and this displays retail or commercial rates depending on your eBay carrier discount preferences.
A current bulk lot I am working on has UPS Ground Commercial rate of $80.08 (retail $137.97) based upon a Zone 8 shipment via PirateShip’s rate calculator. Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. Protectorates, APO / FPO are excluded.
Since UPS retail rates are so much higher than commercial rates I have my eBay preferences set to charge commercial rates for UPS. I would then increase the price of the item by 20% of $80.08 ($16.01) to cover FVF on UPS shipping. In this case I am not even going to offer UPS Ground as Ground Advantage Cubic is much lower.
Ground Advantage Cubic rate to Zone 8 (it qualifies as 1 cubic foot) is $23.80 at the commercial rate. The retail rate is $56.95. I can’t charge the commercial rate as my preferences are set to charge the retail rate for USPS packages. I also can’t override this preference on this one listing by selecting USPS Ground Advantage (commercial) as a shipping option because eBay only offers USPS Ground Advantage and charges a rate depending on your eBay carrier preferences.
Far more ideal to have a maximum possible shipping rate of $23.80 and simply increase the price of the item by 20% of $23.80 ($4.76) than having to charge $56.95 for shipping and then have to refund a large amount. Higher shipping costs make the item less likely to sell.
It sure would be nice to have at least one person at eBay understand even the basic fundamentals about shipping or for that matter care about its sellers.
