Other Improvements / Changes

Notes about synching

If you are using the Mac-to-Mac synching feature of GarageSale Pro, please note that GarageSale 9.9 uses an updated data schema, which older versions of GarageSale cannot handle.
Therefore, once you have uploaded data to the sync server using GarageSale 9.9, older versions of GarageSale will not be able to access your data on the sync server, unless they are updated.

Thanks for using GarageSale,

I will be returning to eBay in the near future, but I’ve not shipped anything since USPS’s consolidation of services in 2024.

Rounding up dimensions might be a bad idea as USPS Cubic Rates are rounded down to the nearest quarter inch to compute the Cubic dimensions of the package and thus a lower shipping rate.

A box with actual dimensions of 12" x 7 7/8" x 12 7/8" (.70410 ft³) will be considered 12" x 7 3/4" x 12 3/4" (.68619 ft³) under Cubic Rate rules - Cubic 0.7, thus saving money.

If GS automatically rounds up these values then the box will be considered as 12" x 8" x 13" (.7222 ft³) - Cubic 0.8, which costs more than than Cubic 0.7.

In some instances rounding the dimensions up will cause the box not to qualify for Cubic Rates.

This may be recreating a problem seen on eBay shipping labels - You could not enter fractional values to purchase a labels. eBay did not offer Cubic rates and had no need for the fractional inputs. This meant any Cubic labels had to be printed on PirateShip or a similar service.

I have my eBay preferences set to charge customers the retail USPS rate, while I pay the commercial rate, with the difference paying the FVF on shipping. Any excessive differences between the two can be resolved via a quick refund.

Previously there were some instance where I wanted to override this eBay preference by charging a customer the lower Parcel Select rate on the item as opposed to the higher USPS Retail Ground Rate. I would simply select the lower Parcel Select option in a GS listing.

Now, however, the shipping options in GS only appear to show only “USPS Ground Advantage”. Can you confirm that is the commercial rate?

The retail rate is named differently by USPS in their rate guide “USPS Ground Advantage - Retail”.

I have not sold anything on eBay since USPS consolidated various services into Ground Advantage and since eBay offered Cubic pricing so this chart may or may not be in error.

My eBay account will not be active for a week or two so I can’t currently test this with live listings.

I have my eBay preferences to charge retail rates.

Is there any way to override eBay preferences on individual listings?

Prior to 2024 I could override my eBay preferences somewhat by changing the USPS Retail Ground rate to Parcel Select so the listing would use the lower commercial Parcel Select rates.

There are some listings which it would be beneficial to offer Cubic rates; however, since these are commercial rates only they would not be offered on the listing if eBay preferences were set to the Retail rate.

Any update on the rounding up of decimal values for package dimensions?

If you have your eBay shipping discount preferences set to commercial rates and offer Ground Advantage or Priority Mail then eBay will determine if the package qualifies for Cubic rates and display that rate if its cheaper.

Cubic rates dimensions are rounded down to the nearest quarter inch. Rounding them up means the package may be billed for a larger cubic rate tier or not qualify for Cubic rates.

Ground Advantage Limit = 1.0 Cubic Foot
Priority Mail Limit - 0.5 Cubic Foot

I am holding off on 9.9 for this specific reason. eBay drops the decimal if you try and list something with a 1.5" thickness for example. So for me, I will have to get used to removing the decimal if I use version 9.9 as I try and make sure my box sizes for known things are set. And because the website has a bug where if you don’t give any dimensions, it assumes a 1x1x1 size [which really really messes things up - see my long thread about this earlier this year], I have to go in to GS and give dimensions for all my bulk lots of books. Very time consuming.

LOL!

Although I currently can’t list items I am able to test eBay’s listing form in draft mode. You can’t enter decimal values for the package dimensions.

I also tested their shipping calculator. It allows you to enter decimal values of up to two digits, but eBay is not rounding the dimensions down to compute Cubic pricing. The test dimensions I entered created a Cubic rate for the next highest tier.

You can’t use carrier specific rate discounts. So if I want offer UPS commercial rate I need to open another account. I need to use a second account for USPS commercial rates so Cubic rates will be displayed for Priority Mail and Ground Advantage, but those rates will not be calculated correctly by eBay. I need a third account to use USPS Retail rates.

You can’t override individual retail rates by choosing the commercial rate (USPS Retail Ground > Parcel Select).

GS will not upload the dimensions I entered, but round them up so even if eBay corrects their end rates will be computed wrong due to GS.

Makes no sense to use eBay at all.

I posted this before. I print all my label on ebay’s website. This is what the note on the page says. “Please make sure you enter the correct package size and dimensions to avoid additional charges from your chosen carrier (i.e., enter 14 when it weighs 13.2 oz)”
