I’m experiencing a problem with the application because I can no longer open it.
I was trying to export a CSV file containing about 9,000 listings. Since the export wasn’t completing, I force-quit the application. From that moment on, GarageSale has been unable to launch.
I also tried downloading and reinstalling a different version of GarageSale, but the problem persists.
Could you please let me know how I can resolve this issue?
No, the application icon does not keep bouncing and nothing happens. I can see the icon with the small dot underneath it, as if the application were open, but GarageSale_10.0b9 is not actually running.
I have also tried moving the application to the Trash, emptying the Trash, restarting the computer, and reinstalling the latest version, but the problem persists.
It’s currently trying to repair as per your instructions. Unfortunately, I have a backup on another location, but it’s from 7/8 months ago. It would be a good idea to recover this. How long can the repair take before I think I have to start crying?
GarageSale has opened, but everything is very slow and I can’t scroll through the listings. However, I don’t want to create any problems. What do you recommend I do at this point?
Re-indexing might take a while. Please give it some time.
If you already can select listings in the left outline view you could (slowly) start to export them (File menu > Export Listings) to save them – just in case.
When I have done a large export of listings, I’ve had a lot safer and more usable behavior from holding the Option key down when selecting the File menu. That will export the items as separate .gslisting bundles, so each one will be individually smaller, and they won’t (as far as I know) take up any more space than the big blob. There doesn’t seem to be any feedback when exporting a huge blob, otherwise, but in this version you can actually see the items appearing in the Finder as they are saved.
This also turns out to be a great way to revive an individual item years later if you need to, and Spotlight (and other drive search things) can often find text inside them as well.
