The latest beta of GS 9.9.1 adds an option “Only start Searching on Return” to the search field’s menu. Hope this helps.
Having said that, we’d really would like to figure out why search is working so poorly for you. Let me know if you could upload your GarageSale library (just the database, no images) to our DropBox, so we could take a look.
