PS. I had removed all Smart Groups and restarted GS before doing the search.

GarageSale spends its time verifying that each hit for your search is still present in the database. It does this check to prevent entries in the search index that point to listing that are no longer present to appear as ghost entries in the search result.
I’ll turn off this verification step in the next beta release, so please let me know if the search performs quicker in that version.
That sounds fantastic Ilja. Looking at the Activity Window I always suspected that “verification” might be part of the issue.
