Are you already using the latest version of GarageSale, version 10.1?

Please open the GarageSale Settings > Accounts and check whether your account token says “upgrade needed”. If it does, please refresh your eBay access token.

Also, maybe your eBay category data is out-dated and needs to be updated manually (“condition” is part of that data). To do this, select one of the listings in question and open the category browser. In that browser click on the sprocket icon to update the category data.

i have done all that, this is not the first time, i have restarted my computer, updated categories, deleted category data restarted garagesale.. i have done all of that so so many times.. if yall know there is a problem why not fix it?

I am sorry to hear it didn’t help. Please let me know which version of GarageSale you have installed. (Just select ‘About GarageSale’ from the ‘GarageSale’ menu in GarageSale.)

Also, what eBay site and what category do you use in that listing?

10.0, it has been happening with all the versions, i recently updated hoping maybe itll be fixed, and nope… i list in all categories… more in like clothes and home stuff then books or media…

like yall know there is an issue.. so why not fix it?

I just tested it with some of the categories you mentioned (eBay US) but for me the condition menu is working perfectly fine.

Please do this:

  1. Update to the latest version GarageSale 10.1. To update simply select “Check for Updates” from the “GarageSale” menu or download directly from the website.

  2. Open the GarageSale Settings > Accounts. Select your eBay account and then click on “Refresh Access Token” to refresh your eBay token. (That’s important for downloading the latest eBay category data.)

  3. If done, update the eBay category data manually one more time.

  4. Re-select the category in your listing.

i have done all this and i just updated to 10.0 last week… and it is still happening consistently… yall apparently know that this is problem cause your always like try this and do this and all this stuff so you know it is an issue just fix it…

The problem is fundamentally caused by ebay changing their data tables of category information too frequently, or propagating the information irregularly across servers. I’ve noticed multiple problems in the last few weeks, essentially daily, where if I list 500 items, two or three will be incorrectly tagged as missing Condition, or not supporting it.

There’s no way to control eBay’s fiddling on their end. But I wonder if the approach that comes closest to making it transparent is perhaps to have GarageSale always (silently) update the Categories before any call to the verification/launch servers.

Is that a possibility? I can see no situation where anybody would want a stale Categories tree, and for me the time it takes is 10-20 seconds when I do it manually.

It still may not completely mask this particular problem, but it is something I’ve started doing every day when I list or re-launch anything at all, since the errors have been cropping up more than once a day for me.

That is: I’ve noticed that updating Categories once sometimes still fails to clean the loose ends up.

mine is not only a few mine is hundreds everyday

I have to say again there’s definitely something wrong at eBay these days, too, but it feels like it might be that GarageSale isn’t updating a local store, or something?

I just stopped and relaunched 200 listings, and had to update categories to get them all to validate before launch. Then literally 10 minutes later, I did it again with another 300. The same categories of listing were broken again.

It feels like it could be:

  • eBay is not providing consistent data from the API servers on multiple requests?
  • the validation servers at eBay are borked?
  • GarageSale isn’t preserving state when the updated category requirements are downloaded?
  • mysterious fourth thing?

a few minutes later: Just now because I was curious, that same batch of 300 listings which cleared validation once I’d updated categories… now after 10 more minutes is reporting several categories are incorrect again. It’s not the same ones this time, which is even weirder.

The most obstructive categories seem to be deep weird little US leaf categories, like Category 183202 and Category 83957, both of which just now “re-broke” after a few minutes of just sitting quietly here.

odd thought is it possible that the near-continuous process of “Updating eBay listings” I see in Activity Window is undermining the local data store? Because I have so many listings and actively update them hourly, it tends to always be running.

Feels like to me if garage sale knows there’s a problem because clearly they do because they’re like when you message them. Try this. Try that this will fix it. This will fix it so they know there’s a problem. Why not fix the problem

The thing is @BBsales the “try this” fix (update categories) has worked whenever these symptoms have arisen in the past, and the problem was caused by eBay server issues not because of something that can be fixed on the GarageSale side.

Whenever you submit a listing, using whatever software you want, the first thing that happens is that it’s validated. If the information you used to downloaded from the servers to initially construct the listing wasn’t the same data being used to validate it, then during the second phase (validation) it will not be marked valid.

Over the last several years eBay has had a lot of trouble keeping those two data sources synchronized, since they are different API programs running on different servers. But for almost all of that time, the correct way to fix it is exactly what GarageSale devs have implemented and suggested: Since the data is out of sync, manually synchronize them locally and it should work. It almost always did!

It actually still works. Even if you get some errors, just launch the subset of the listings that validate, and download the categories again, and the next time they will work. Or, on a really bad eBay day, a third time.

But I have never seen a single listing that is marked as an Error by the validation servers that doesn’t launch just fine if I update the categories before trying the next time.

Except for the last week or so.

What has apparently changed is that eBay serving the initial info (in the Categories table we download manually when we select Update Categories) and the validation info (which marks attempted launches as Errors) has changed somehow. It may be that eBay is literally being inconsistent, maybe over multiple edge servers or database cache marks.

So the best way to help the GarageSale developer team to find a way of ameliorating the problem seems to me to be providing data, detailed information about the issue we’re experiencing, and helpful advice about our local experiences. That’s how I’d like to approach it, and I recommend you do the same.

Because frustrating as this can be, GarageSale is network software, and it depends on multiple servers and API systems coordinating with the software when it runs. It’s not something that happens 100% inside GarageSale.

We hope we’ve been able to improve the category/condition situation with GarageSale 10.2.
It fixed a bug where category metadata could be lost when updating too many categories at once. This hopefully fixes the ‘No condition’ issue.

You can already download a beta version here:

(An updated eBay access token is still required.)
